My Students

I teach in an incredibly unique combination of two schools. Our middle school is part of the local urban district serving a low-income/high-poverty population where students have many challenges. The high school, housed in the same building, is made up of students from all over the county representing a truly diverse population in both socioeconomic background and ethnic diversity.

Because of this incredible combination we have not only an opportunity to close achievement gaps but also work together to create a unique school culture that is collaborative, supportive, and engaging in all grades 6-12.

Our students are so motivated, want to learn, and as a faculty we are inspired by their resilience, positivism, and engagement. We love our music program and our students have an excellent outlet for their creativity in an environment that supports the arts.

My Project

Over the years participation in our music program has grown significantly and although technology can be an excellent way to help students learn, the physical act of writing is still proven to be the most effective way for students to retain information.

Erasable whiteboards are a way to ensure all my students have an ability to practice their written musical concepts and for me to assess their work in a quick and concise manner.

It also provides opportunity for them to experiment and make musical attempts in a visually understandable way.

It is my goal that every student can have an effective way to practice being musicians and composers and these materials would be a huge step in that direction.
