This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The books featured in this project are destined for approximately 600 kids in 3rd through 8th grade. They are students at a K-8 center in South Florida. I run the school library. About 84% of my library patrons come from households with below average income. The kids tend to be first-generation Americans whose parents have recently arrived in the U.S. from the Caribbean, or from Central or South America. The children don't have access to a lot of juvenile literature at home.

Books wear out - especially super-popular books: our library desperately needs brand new copies of our most beloved titles.

My Project

These are the books that FLY off the library shelves: 3rd and 4th graders come running before school and between classes to pick up Pokemon and Captain Underpants; older kids come through the library doors and make a beeline to the Dork Diaries, Lumberjanes and Babysitters' Club shelves. Books that are read so much do wear out after a few years, so we desperately need new copies of our kids' favorite stories. The success of this project is guaranteed: we know, based on current circulation, that these books will be constantly checked out and that they will be read by hundreds of students. Please help us keep our young readers well-supplied with excellent books!
