My Students
My 5 amazing students attend a vocational training school in Brooklyn, NY. They all are on the Autism Spectrum, as well as have multiple disabilities. Many are nonverbal or have limited verbal skills. My students are learning to care for themselves and become as independent as possible within their own communities. My students bring a smile to my face every day, and bring joy to all of those who they encounter.
These 5 students require greater support than I can provide, given the constraints the Covid-19 pandemic has put on our ability to teach and learn in the traditional format we are all used to.
My Project
Prior to Covid-19, I was able to provide amazing functional and vocational opportunities for them within our school, as well as within the community. My 5 students participate in a functional, vocational curriculum throughout the day. They are learning how to manage their behaviors, while increasing their independence in caring for themselves and their surroundings.

Since Covid-19 hit NYC, my students have struggled the most with returning to in-person learning.
The classroom environment is not the same loving, comforting environment it once was. My students desperately need these materials to calm their anxieties and cope with confusing changes that comes with the chaos of blended learning. These materials will provide students an outlet for their stress and anxiety, as well as provide motivating resources to learn new content and new skills. These materials will allow students to learn to self-regulate and self-soothe. Students enjoy lounging on a bean bag, cuddling up with a tactile pillow, or using the iPad after working hard to complete an academic task.
