My Students

To put it simply, my students are diamonds in the rough. They are talented and smart individuals that come from very limited resources. I teach kindergarten in a Title I school that consists of many low-income families and a very high population of English language learners. The majority of the students at my school receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch. And, aside from financial hardship, many of my students have experienced trauma at a very young age.

Every year I have a few kindergartners that come to me with mild to severe emotional trauma.

They are living in a shelter because they are homeless or because their parent is a victim of domestic violence. Or, most often, they come from a home where English is not the main language spoken. And, in turn, school becomes a foreign country full of unknown words and sounds. Suddenly, their ability to verbally communicate at school is a daily struggle. And, because many of their parents do not speak English, they have limited support outside the classroom.

My Project

All the fundamental building blocks for reading and writing begin in kindergarten. I have asked for writing supplies that will help support and improve my students' abilities to legibly print all the upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

The lined white boards will provide specific guidance to each student on proper handwriting techniques.

For example, the dotted lines will tell the students where to start writing and where to stop. How tall to make their letters and how to write in a straight line. And, the use of the Expo markers will encourage my students to improve their fine motor skills and develop neat handwriting.

The larger magnetic white boards will be used by myself and my assistant to help model the writing process in both whole group and small group instruction. And, when the writing lessons are over, each student will use one knitted glove as an eraser when they are done writing on the white boards.
