This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am fortunate to serve as a founding staff member of a newer (8 years young) public school in Brooklyn, NY. I work alongside the most inquisitive first-grade minds in our community! They are thoughtful, kind, diverse, multilingual, and compassionate. My students range from children beginning to learn about the building blocks of reading, to those who spend up to an hour each day delving into books and losing themselves in the world of language. Thanks to the generosity of many donors, I have been able to attend Professional Development workshops to improve my pedagogical skills and increase my awareness around various facets of education.

Though professional development is a New York state teaching requirement, it is often up to the teachers to find and fund appropriate classes to increase their repertoire.

My Project

As a general education teacher, I have been able to teach and learn from a variety of students. I want to continue to grow and develop my pedagogy as I pursue my passion: creating an inclusive environment where students are identified for their exceptionalities and taught in ways to support their various learning needs.

Many students fall through the cracks because their teachers didn't know which signs to look out for to better support their individual growth.

I want to change that for my students.

I recently completed one of the four required courses to obtain an additional New York State certification to better support students with disabilities. This proposal will enable me to enroll in another required course, “Special Education Course 512," which focuses on applying a variety of approaches to classroom management and individualized behavior plans so that I can deepen my knowledge and better support all of my students.

I know how important it is to provide students with early intervention before they experience failure. With your support, I can immerse myself in these accelerated courses to fully support my students this year and in all the future years to come.
