Supporting Students Where They’re At: Attending the At-Risk Students Conference
I need funding to attend the At-Risk Students Conference in late June 2019, so I can learn how to best support my students and implement this learning into my plans for next school year.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. V.'s classroom raised $1,546
This project is fully funded
Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is small by public school standards; it is just under 900 students in a building that can accommodate up to 1,500. My U.S. History students make up almost the entirety of the junior class. I have cheerleaders; football, basketball, and volleyball players; theater, band, and art students; JROTC and honors society students. Some are shy, some are loud, some are bossy, some are sly, some are goofy, some will tell it like it is, and some will spare your feelings.
My students are diverse, but they all have one thing in common: they come from minority, low-income, hard-working families and live in some of the poorest, and recently gentrifying, areas of our cosmopolitan city.
Prior to desegregation, our school served as the only African American public high school for miles and miles. To this day, the student population continues to be about 50% African American, but the demographics of the area have changed. The school now serves a large Latino community, made up mostly of students fleeing the hostile regimes in Central America. Many have come as unaccompanied minors and have never had formal schooling.
76% of my students are reading below grade level.
My Project
Every year, I become a better teacher. I learn from my mistakes, reflect on my practice, and set goals for the upcoming school year. Year One and Two, I focused on the nuts-and-bolts of my teaching craft and management in the classroom. This year, I have expanded to create more enrichment opportunities for my students both inside and outside of the classroom, despite the demands of state exams. Next year, I want to learn as much as I can about my students’ backgrounds, educational psychology, social-emotional learning, and research about teaching vulnerable populations. The At Risk Students Conference in Atlanta, GA will help me learn from and have access to researchers and educators that have worked extensively with vulnerable populations across the U.S. In turn, I can come back to my school site and help other educators who are struggling with teaching and assisting the most vulnerable students.
More than half of students from low‑income households
