Our school is a K-5 elementary school, located in a rural district in Virginia. Our students are enthusiastic and curious about the world around them. Every day they come to school ready and excited to learn, and their excitement is contagious. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and home situations, and many of them lack resources and support at home.
A strong collaboration between home and school is vital for students' academic success, and it is important to support our students not only at school but also at home.
Family involvement can take many forms. It can be parents attending parent-teacher conferences. It can be a grandmother helping with homework. It can be an uncle bringing his nephews to school events. As a school, we want to encourage as many methods of family involvement as possible. One new strategy we'd like to implement is a Family Resource Library in our front lobby.
Our school's Family Resource Library will provide families with resources about topics of relevance and interest.
For example, many parents are curious about how to better support their children's academics. They may want to read The Parent Backpack or the Read-Aloud Handbook. Other families may be interested about managing children's screen time. Screenwise or Screen-Free Fun may be sources of information for them. Other parents may not have time to read a book, but may be interested in reading the articles in Parents magazine.
There are many ways that a school can support its students. One way is by providing families with the latest information about topics of interest. Our new Family Resource Library is an innovative way to support our students by supporting their families.
