This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a middle school counselor at an inner-city alternative school. All of our students receive special education and are on Individual Education Plans, our students' primary disabilities are Social-Emotional and/or Autism. In spite of their circumstances, they attend school daily and are ready to learn.
Our school is one of the most impoverished schools in Massachusetts, according to the Department of Education, 90% of our students live in poverty.
Many students face stress, anxiety, and difficulties in self-regulation, making creative outlets essential for their well-being. Art and interactive projects allow students to express their emotions in a safe and constructive manner, build problem-solving skills, and develop self-awareness and empathy. All of these activities will provide them with something tangible to take home. By incorporating these activities into our counseling program, we can create a supportive environment that enhances students’ mental health and social skills.
