This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Due of a lack of financial resources, my students don't always have all the tools and support they could use to succeed. Their resilience and character is astounding, and it would be great to match that with the support & resources they deserve, to help them better prepare for the AP Calculus exam.
My students are hard-working, empathetic, and compassionate individuals.
They attend a school that strives to inspire students to make positive changes in this world. They also come from an environment that isn't always full of the support they need. Despite pressure and issues related to gangs, violence, drugs, and poverty, our students have managed to survive and thrive, and they make efforts every day to grow and flourish without adding to the toxicity of the world around them. My students pour heart and soul into their education, work hard to help each other, and give in any way they can, even when they don't have much to give. Because of the financial pressures many of my students face, they can't all afford to purchase many of the AP review books that other students can. I'd like to put them on a level playing field with more financially fortunate students by getting them review books so that they too, can succeed on the AP Calculus exam.
My Project
Calculus is said to be one of the most difficult AP exams, and my students are working hard to meet the challenge. They're already giving up one Saturday every month to go to AP preparation classes at a local university, and I want to match that dedication to their learning by providing them with these review books.
The exam contains 45 multiple-choice questions and 6 free-response questions, and students are challenged to demonstrate their understanding of abstract mathematical concepts, as well as their procedural knowledge & ability to apply theorems.
The book I want is a very helpful resources, and I worked with the students to select the review book that best fits their needs. The book is detailed, with practice exam questions, instructions on how to use graphing technology, which is crucial for the AP Calculus exam, and includes a CD with additional practice. Please help us obtain these much-needed resources!
While my school inspires students to seek social change and challenge injustices, the community needs more resources and assets in the form of knowledgeable people to succeed in some of their endeavors.
My hope is to inspire students to pursue post-secondary studies in engineering and science, so that they can bring their knowledge and expertise back to a community that needs it.
