Supporting Struggling Students with Academic Rigor

My students need and would benefit from having updated technology in our classroom: an iPad, keyboard and headphones.

My Students

I want my students to be successful, actively and intentionally engaged in their own learning throughout the year. For many of us foundational language and literacy skills are skills we don't struggle with. But for many of my students, these are just the things they become frustrated with.

I have 30-3rd graders from the inner city, 16 of those are ELL students.

Many of my students come from homes that can not provide technology and opportunities for them to overcome their language and reading deficiencies. My students want to learn and providing them with opportunities for treating the underlying cause of language and reading difficulties will help them be successful in life.

My Project

Research shows that iPads can benefit learners of all ages, improving student engagement and boosting perseverance. These findings are particularly exciting for struggling learners, who can be harder to engage. A new iPad with newer apps would make it possible for my students to expand their learning. All my students would benefit; from at-risk and special education students, to English language learners, to gifted students. The touch-screen functionality of the iPad will also make it easier to use the program with my struggling students which will make a big difference in their academic careers.

This iPad will not only help to prepare them for fourth grade, but their self-esteem will grow as well!

For my struggling readers, various functions of the iPad will help them navigate and control the apps as they are learning new skills. Studies have shown that students who use some of the new applications (as Fast Foreword for example) can make up to two years’ gain in three months in reading and language skills! This is exciting for my students!
