My Students
My students think that they know EVERYTHING, but they are so wrong. There is so much for them to learn. They attend an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. All my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Many of them are the children of deployed military personnel. I have a number of students who are homeless or live in shelters. I have a transient student population. Over 50% of my class come and go during the course of the school year. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. Many of my kids do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle for them. They generally do not have access to technology or reading materials outside of school.
The students in my sixth grade class are trying very hard to be successful but they need help with stimulating environmental projects that our school cannot supply.
My Project
My school is not a Title One school, but we are a school that is economically disadvantaged. When our district recently adopted a science curriculum, they did not provide textbooks or reading materials. Our classroom library does not have materials to teach the topics covered by the new curriculum. I am working hard to gather appropriate materials and resources to teach my sixth graders about the environment. I will soon be trying to engage my students as I teach the scientific method, observation and report writing.
My students will be learning about scientific notebooks, how to write reports on environmental issues and how to create informative "message posters".
Our classroom is small. My students have essentially no storage for their work because they work at tables. They need composition books to use as science journals, erasers to correct their mistakes, and an inexpensive metal storage unit so they can organize and easily access their environmental action projects, supplies and journals.
Our school does not have money for these essentials, my students need the help of supportive donors.
More than half of students from low‑income households
