My students need puzzles to put together, as puzzles are a good intervention when helping them to calm down. Wobble Chairs and Bean Bags will allow them to choose where they will sit to learn.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are very special students with very special needs. All of my students have challenging behaviors that impede their learning and the learning of others. Despite their behavioral challenges they all have areas of strength that need to constantly be nurtured.
My students love to come to school and learn.
I love when my students are able to use strategies within the classroom to manage their emotions and return to learning. Most of my students are from single parent, low income homes.
My Project
My students struggle with learning because they have deficits in managing and regulating their emotions - which leads to challenging behavior - which impedes their learning and the learning of others.
My goal for the upcoming school year is to create a therapeutic classroom which supports the sensory and emotional needs of my students.
Putting puzzles together is calming and allows for a time out for the student. The puzzles I have selected are simple enough, but also allow for academic discussion.
The flexible seating supports my students with ADHD. Often, I look up and students are bouncing and/or standing or leaning back in their chairs.
With the puzzles my students will have the choice of calming down in a way that does not impede their learning or the learning of others. With the flexible seating, my students have the opportunity to decide how and where they will sit to learn, and not have to learn how to sit.
