Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Over half of the 32 students in my classroom speak a language other than English at home. The ability to hear, learn and produce the sounds of English letters is crucial. A crowded, noisy classroom makes it exceedingly difficult for students to focus and concentrate on their own speech.

Our school has the second highest concentration of poverty in our state.

Seven of my 32 students are homeless. The majority do not speak English as their native language. While school is obviously a place for learning, it is also where they get two meals a day, and a stability and consistency that may not be available at home. However, due to budgeting constraints, our class sizes go up each year and it becomes harder and harder for students to get the individual attention that they need. Some of this is seen in the fact that we don't have enough room for all the backpacks and jackets. More importantly the impact is seen when students can not find a quiet place to focus on their own work. Many of my students are aware of what, or who, distracts them and they are aware of what resources help them shut out these distractions, but with the larger class sizes we simply don't have enough of those resources.

My Project

The greatest challenge for many of my students is to really be able to hear the slight differences between the sounds in the English language. The variations between the short vowels, the blending of consonants and the many combinations of sounds requires a high level of auditory discrimination. The HearFones I am requesting are a huge leap above a traditional whisper phone in several ways. The most important improvement is that HearFones carry the student's voice to both ears at the same time. The HearFones also shut out background noise so that students can really focus on their work and not the distractions of a busy, crowded classroom. A final advantage of the HearFones is that they are hands-free. Students can hold a mirror and look at how they need to use the muscles in their lips, tongues, cheeks and throat to create different sounds. One final advantage - students can hold a book, turn pages and devote their full attention to a text without fumbling a handheld device.

Once students have had an opportunity to use HearFones, their eyes often pop wide open.

They simply have not been able to hear their own voices. Using a mirror and the HearFones makes learning the sounds concrete and accessible. They learn how the placement of their tongue or the shape of their lips changes the sounds that they produce. For many, the sounds in the English language are very different from their first languages and the HearFones help them build a new foundation of sounds.
