My Project
Our 4th-grade class is collecting donations of diapers and wipes to support our local crisis nursery—a nonprofit that plays a vital role in our community. The crisis nursery is often the only place families can turn to on weekends and holidays when other services are closed. It provides essentials like formula, diapers, pull-ups, and wipes with no questions asked. Some of the families who receive support from the nursery are even part of our own school community, making this cause especially close to our hearts. We’re asking for your help to ensure they never have to turn a family away due to lack of supplies.
Through this project, our 4th graders are learning to see the world through the eyes of others.
By understanding that not all children have access to the things they may take for granted, they begin to develop empathy and a broader perspective on the world. Supporting the crisis nursery helps students recognize that even small actions—like donating diapers—can have a real impact on someone's life. These experiences teach them that their voices and efforts matter and that they are capable of contributing to solutions in their own community.
As a teacher, I can measure the success of this project not just by the number of items collected, but by the conversations students have and the reflections they share. When students express concern for others, ask thoughtful questions about how families end up needing support, or come up with their own ideas for helping, it shows they’re truly engaging with the concept of compassion. Service learning like this makes empathy real and lasting, helping shape students into thoughtful, caring citizens.
