Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a teacher in the RISE program. We are a self-contained therapeutic program housed in a comprehensive high school. Our students are placed with us as an alternative to the mainstream high school or instead of being placed in an out-of-district placement. Our goal is to get these students to school and educate them in a smaller therapeutic setting. Most of the students suffer from previous traumas so we strive to ensure they are given a warm, caring, therapeutic environment that entices them to want to come to school.
The resources such as a popcorn maker, power strips, headphones, poster boards, etc.
included in this project will assist us in providing students with healthy foods, snacks, incentives, instructional tools, and classroom support which will allow the staff to build connections with students by helping to meet basic needs.
The majority of our students have not had many feelings of success and achievement in school and many at-risk students have been able to graduate and find post-secondary success.
Our students face many issues outside of school including poverty and an inability to have many of their basic needs met. By providing snacks, some of which students earn through a restorative-based rewards program, these students no longer have to worry about hunger taking away from their ability to focus on their studies and discover academic success.
We like to do hands-on projects with the students so using a variety of art supplies is essential for their learning.
Each student is given a computer to use so having their own headphones is essential for learning programs and charging stations as well.
