My Project
When schools prioritize access to arts programs as part of their educational vision, they maximize the potential for students to discover and develop the fullest expression of themselves. In that spirit of discovery and development, it is my sincere hope as the music teacher of DVS, a K-8 independent charter school in Los Angeles serving low income hispanic and black students, that like-minded individuals will share that vision and support my students and this request for ukuleles.
The ukulele is considered a "gateway" instrument, as it literally can open a student's perspective to the possibilities and joys of music making; my goal for this project is that with these magical ukuleles, students will be able to "open the door" to their musical voices.
It is an honor and a privilege for me to be of service to all the students at DVS. They are so appreciative of having a music class, which only began for them last year, as the school was without a music program for ten years. With a 'student-centered' curriculum in place, the engagement and investment in music that I've observed from my scholars is making a profound difference in their learning and in their lives; to be able to provide ukuleles for them to strum on and sing along to, the sky is the limit!
