I have been fortunate enough to return to my alma mater this school year to continue my career in education. I teach at a Title I school in a rural part of Alabama. A majority of students in our school are from low-income households.
My fantastic second graders are smart, kind, and full of energy!
Everyday is an adventure! They come to school eager to learn despite the hardships they are facing outside of school. In a few short months, I have learned so much from each and every child in my classroom. In return, I want to give them the tools and knowledge they need to succeed not only in second grade, but throughout the rest of their lives. I could not ask for a better group of students to work with each day!
My Project
In our classroom, we use individual whiteboards and dry erase markers throughout the day. Our school system recently adopted a new phonics program that includes a multisensory delivery method that activates several areas of the brain. This program supports all students including those who are "visual", "auditory", or "kinesthetic" learners. As part of this program, students use whiteboards and dry erase markers to spell and mark words that are dictated by a teacher.
By using whiteboards and dry erase markers, I am able to circle the room and informally assess each student.
This allows me to see which students have grasped the concept and which students may need more instruction. Having students make corrections on a whiteboard is much more convenient than using a pencil and paper. The students also enjoy pairing up and calling out words to each other during center time. The possibilities with this program are endless!
Besides phonics instruction, we also use whiteboards and dry erase markers during math instruction. My students enjoy using markers and boards versus paper and pencil. By using dry erase markers daily, we go through them pretty quick! Please help me provide my students with more dry erase markers, so that we may continue having fun with our successful phonics program!
