My Students

I am an elementary Life Skills teacher in a high poverty school. All of my students receive free lunch. We currently have six Life Skills classes in our building. There are over 40 students with a wide range of physical and developmental disabilities including Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, sensory or visual impairment, and Autism. Our students require all academics to be modified, and they access the curriculum through a variety of methods.

We have a big goal this year .

. . to create a multi-sensory learning center for ALL the classes to use. This therapeutic room will allow children who are non-ambulatory to get out of their wheelchairs and explore materials safely. Students with limited vision will be able to access the light stimulation they require. Cause and effect activities will also be readily available for students working on those skills. Students with behavioral challenges can also use this room as a calming environment or for reinforcement.

My Project

Having a classroom library is essential as students need immediate and frequent access to books to encourage reading as well as providing a safe and comfortable space. Research shows that students in classrooms with high-quality classroom libraries read 50 percent more than students who do not have access to a library in the classroom.

As a teacher of children with special needs, one of my key roles is to help my students overcome their difficulties in reading.

Having a classroom library will offer my wonderful students a wide range of materials that will appeal to and support their needs while keeping their different interests and abilities in mind.
