My Students
I am a Chinese teacher that teaches students from 3rd to 5th grades. I usually start my day with telling my students what our learning goal is for the day then I will start our lesson. For the rest of the lesson, I design different learning activities for my students to practice their skills.
My students are 3rd to 5th graders.
My students have Chinese daily and Chinese is a core subject in my school. My school is a Title 1 school. I do not have a homeroom, so I have to travel to classes to teach my students Chinese. I have a cart where I put all my teaching materials and I take the cart with me wherever I teach. I have six classes everyday and each class is 50-minute long.
Since I have a very heavy teaching load, I make one lesson plan for my classes. However, all my classes are Malti-level, some are even Malti-age, I have to use a variety of differentiation strategies to meet my students needs. For example, I can have three different assessments for my students based on their levels.
Recently, I am working on learning centers in my classrooms. I understand that in classrooms where there are students of Malti-levels, using learning centers allows lower students to spend more time practicing lessons from class while my more advanced student can do more challenging work.
My Project
There are a variety of activities that my students will do in learning centers:
1. Pair Dictation Center: Students will be able to practice their listening and writing skills in Chinese.
2. Matching Center: the matching center will have pictures of vocabulary and words that match. It will help students with their vocabulary learning. I will laminate the materials so that they will last and can be reused which is why I requested a laminator and laminating pouches.
3. Making Sentences Center: students will rearrange the cards where there are words to make sentences. Cards are coded by parts of speech, which is why I need card stocked will help students with their writing skill in Chinese. The activity will need to hanging wall pocket chart.
4. Mixed up Story Center: students will receive a picture and a text that are cut in pieces. They will need to rearrange the pieces to the correct order so that it narrates the story based on it context.
5. Bingo Center.
6. Listening.
7. Writing.
I have started learning center for a week.
However, due to the constraint of resources available, some great activities can not be done, like my listening station. Also, materials created could be torn easily without laminating. If these materials like Bingo, pictures and words cards, can be laminated because I have a laminator, they can be kept well and reused for different classes, and for a teacher who do all the cutting for these pieces, it would save me a lot of time from copying.
