Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Comfort Through Stories – Supporting Grieving Students. We are seeking funding to provide copies of “Dog Heaven” and “Cat Heaven” by Cynthia Rylant, and “The Invisible Leash" Collection by Mary Rosenstock for students who have experienced the loss of a pet or loved one.

These gentle, beautifully illustrated books help children process grief through comforting, inclusive stories that speak to love, loss, and healing.

Losing a pet or loved one is often a child’s first experience with death. For many students—especially those without access to mental health resources—school becomes the primary place for emotional support. These books will be offered through our library, classrooms, and mental health providers to help students explore difficult emotions in a safe and affirming way.

This project directly supports students’mental health and social-emotional development. The books offer language to name and manage grief, promoting self-awareness and emotional regulation. Used in small groups or individual sessions, they help normalize feelings of loss and open space for healing conversations.

We also see this work as part of our commitment to racial justice and representation. Rylant’s illustrations reflect children of diverse racial and cultural backgrounds, affirming that all children—especially students of color—deserve to see themselves in narratives of care, empathy, and emotional truth. This representation matters. It tells our students: your grief is valid, your feelings matter, and your healing is important.

We are requesting funding for paw stickers and several copies of each title to share with grieving students. By using inclusive literature to support emotional well-being, we nurture not only academic success but the whole child—mind, heart, and spirit.
