My Project

In fifth grade, we teach about a lot of “big idea” concepts like multi digit operations (with decimals) and fractions (with uncommon denominators and mixed numbers, and operations with them, too! While many adults might have grown up just learning “strategies” and equations, this method of learning mathematics often actually causes a disservice to students because we replace mathematical number sense and sound reasoning with illogical “rules” that just so happen to work, though it may not always work, nor be the most efficient approach to problem solving!

We need to reframe math as the act of playing with numbers, not just solving problems, especially in the upper elementary grades.

Kids already begin to classify themselves as “bad at math” merely because we transition students from concrete, visual mathematics to abstract mathematics too early and quickly, making it inaccessible for some students. These materials will help my students foster a sense of flexible mathematical thinking using math manipulatives, non-permanent work surfaces and markers, and comfortable seating options. Many students need additional supports in the classroom, when asked to try things in a new or unfamiliar way. Kids need support and comfort. These tools with help me to provide that reassurance for them!
