My Students
I am lucky to be teaching a new health and fitness course where students will finally get a chance to exercise and practice good eating habits during the school day. I am a biology teacher by training and I think my scientific background will help students understand the scientific evidence that supports exercise and nutrition for positive physical and mental health. I work at a small, Title I school of just two hundred kids. Title I means a high percentages of children from low-income families. The small size of our school helps create a safe, open environment but it often means we lack the opportunities that larger or better funded schools have. Most of our students come from the South Bronx and Harlem and commute an hour to come to our school.
My students are passionate and motivated and strive for more hands-on experiences.
As their biology and health teacher I've been stressing the importance of proper nutrition and physical fitness for mental health, academic performance and general well-being. They have bought in and are eager. We just need materials to make this happen!
My Project
I teach biology and health at a New York City public school. This year I am beginning a physical education course to support my students' often overlooked physical health. There is a wealth of research supporting the benefits of physical activity on academic performance and no students should be denied the chance to reap the psychological and physiological benefits of exercise.
Unfortunately my school doesn't have gym space for my students to run around and so I'm instituting a free weight program to maximize the little space we have.
In New York City and around the country physical education has been deemed a low priority and funding and space have been hard to come by. Despite this, the importance of being physically fit and the connections of physical health and mental health are more of an issue than ever before. I want my students to have the opportunity to work off stress, to work on their self-esteem, and to burn off energy so they can focus in their other classes, and this program can help that all happen. Please help my students be healthy and happy kids!
