This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Hi everyone! My name is Ms. Green, and I am a 5th-year English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at a low-income elementary school in the South Bronx. I have formed such as bond with my 5th grade students, whom I started teaching when they were in 2nd grade! In particular, there is a group of young ladies who love to learn, create, and have fun!
This group also includes students who just arrived to the country and are learning English, so it will be a great opportunity for them to socialize with their peers and learn the language in a low-risk, no-pressure environment.
My Project
What better way to build camaraderie and life-long friendships than a monthly Arts and Crafts lunch group for girls! My students always ask to come to my room during their lunch period, but I never have anything fun for them except dancing to Go Noodle videos. That is why I decided to form a monthly lunch group where they can work on arts and crafts projects in a fun, safe environment full of laughter and creativity.
Materials such as Dream Catcher Kits and Perler Beads with stencils will be fun activities for the girls to socialize over.
Not to mention the added benefits of building their language skills, as they are ESL students! In particular, my hope is that by working on projects and asking each other for help and ideas, this group can be a comfortable environment for the students who are just learning English to experiment with the English language and begin to learn social language.
During our first meeting, we went on social media and gathered ideas about projects to do. So far the girls really want to make dream catchers, glow in the dark fairy jars, lava jars, sand jars slime, perler beads, and more! All the materials requested for this project will help make this lunch group a huge success!
