This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a Title I school with ninety-nine percent of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. I am a teacher of students with autism who are amazing! Each is only three or four years old, but is brilliant in his or her own right. Some are very vocal and receive time in the general education classroom.
One has gone from saying three words at the beginning of last school year to speaking in complete sentences.
Others are learning to use the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) to express their needs. I love the way my students work together in the play center. I am proud of the way they have welcomed new students into our class!
My Project
As a special education teacher, I am responsible for educating and helping identify students with disabilities. Appropriate assessment tools are essential to determining the presence and type of disability.
My students and their families need access to diagnostic tools such as the GARS-2 to help determine if a student has an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
These rating scales are used during the initial assessment and re-evaluation process. They help teachers and other team members determine the presence and severity of autism symptoms. This information in turn helps the team determine how much support the child needs and the areas the support is needed in such as communication and academic subjects.
Many individuals with autism have sensory needs. This can include the desire to put objects in their mouths. "Chewelry”, or chewable jewelry, helps students with this sensory need to chew or bite on a designated object. Other students benefit from the use of fidget toys and similar tools that address their desire to touch other people or objects. The use of sensory tools helps students focus in class.
