My Students
Each day students enter the classroom excited to engage in hands on learning that enables them to ask thoughtful questions and think with creativity and depth. This type of learning requires students to have access to a variety of tools and materials.
My 1st grade students are scientists, artists, question-askers, English language learners, peace-makers, mathematicians and poets.
They strive to be their best selves each day so that they can engage in the joyous and challenging work of learning. We are a community that celebrates its diversity and supports and learns from the uniqueness of each member. My school is located in a diverse neighborhood of Seattle and has developed strong ties with local organizations to support a community of immigrant, refugee, and low-income families.
My Project
These materials will enable hands on exploration on a daily basis with a particular emphasis on supporting STEM learning. Students will explore concepts of structure, gravity, weight and balance with the Kapla blocks and Play-doh. Students will use these materials to experiment with balls and ramps, create models of eco-systems they are reading about in non-fiction texts, and engineer models of spaceships, castles, and other structures they dream up. The microscope will allow students to closely examine and make observations of found objects from the natural world. On nature walks we will collect items from nearby Lake Washington, parks, and our school garden and examine these objects up close.
Having these materials in the classroom will allow my students to explore the world around them through hands-on, inquiry based activities and inspire them to creatively and thoughtfully seek answers to their questions.
