My Students

"Art doesn’t transform. It just plain forms." ~ Roy Lichtenstein I see proof of this art quote in my classroom every day. In art, a little color can go a long way! Students make connections to art, other disciplines, and themselves, even the students who start the year telling me otherwise.

My art students are all elementary grades from K through 5, and the school is of the highest need.

Daily, one hundred percent of the student population receives free breakfast and lunch. There are several English language learners in the school population, and transient students join the population throughout the school year. Although the school is high need, it is also highly caring. Teachers, support staff, and administration in the school work hard to create a caring environment. Parent participation is seen daily at student pick-up, in Math and Reading Night events, in PTO events, and in community events such as concerts and monthly student awards ceremonies. School pride is a daily reminder for students, in addition to their daily lesson targets. The school's focus is not merely to make better readers or thinkers in math, although students reading levels are improving all the time, but to also develop our students' character as well.

My Project

An additional fact about our school is that is is high in art talent! In the art room it isn't a coloring class--students are making connections to history, math, literacy, and science in addition to learning art. Handing my students a marker gives my students a little more "voice" in their art making, allowing them to use expression in their drawing, while also being a medium to make art and other disciplinary connections. In one example, in art class, students made science connections by using complimentary color markers to learn about warm and cool fronts, while also illustrating a variety of cloud forms. Students were able to identify art elements and recognize how clouds and storms form. In addition to being expressive medium, markers and paints are comfortable art mediums for students' many motor skill abilities. Markers are not only a vividly colorful medium, but it will also be a welcome change from pencil and crayon.

As said above, a little color goes a long way.

Art lessons are something carried out of the classroom. Visual learners may use their interests to drive their learning in other classes. Artwork the students make is not only displayed in the art room, but also school-wide, boosting school morale and giving students something to be proud of. Please support the creativity of our students, and help give them a means to create and add expression in their learning.
