Support the Amazing Benefits of Novel Studies!

Help me give my students a class set of books for novel study.

My Students

Our school serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. More than eighty-five percent of our children come from low-income households with little access to books or media. Students I work with often complain they are not allowed to go to the public library because of safety issues or lack of adult assistance due to working parents and guardians. Without access to books, our students often enter middle school behind their national grade-level peers.

Despite the daily challenges posed by gang violence and poverty, my students have a strong desire to learn.

They recognize the importance of their education and are fiercely committed to their learning as a vehicle for changing their situations and community.

My Project

Research shows whole class novel studies have a myriad of benefits for students. I am working hard to give my students many opportunities to develop social skills thought discussion and dialogue. By choosing a contemporary novel that appeals to teen readers, I can provide my students with opportunities to build background knowledge, enhance communication and dialogue skills, develop social skills and get excited about reading!

The book Dear Martin is about a young black student who decides to start a journal to Martin Luther King, Jr.

after a life-changing event. This book will provide a way to engage students in thinking about race, identity, and tolerance in America.
