This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” ― Benjamin Franklin
I want to involve my students, by providing them with materials for scientific exploration. This will lead to authentic learning.
I teach a diverse group of third graders in a Title 1, K-8 school.
Many of the children come from low socioeconomic homes where English is not the spoken language. I have found that their background knowledge is limited, which can be a challenge. Despite this challenge, my students are eager to learn new things, especially science.
My Project
My students will be able to explore magnetism, weather, and fossils through the center materials I am requesting. I can picture the excitement in their eyes when I reveal these scientific resources. They become eager and filled with enthusiasm whenever they become "scientists." For instance, my students explored penguin adaptations by sticking their hands in icy water wearing a "blubber glove" made out of a plastic bag and Crisco. I want to continue to provide these experiences for my students and can do so with your help.
Donations to this project will change the way my students learn science!
They will no longer be having me tell and teach them, but will actually be involved in doing it. I know they will become more excited to learn, and enjoy their experiences. Many may decide to become scientists themselves!
