Help me give my students the tools they need to self-regulate. Given that my kids are from communities that often experience a lot of trauma it feels essential to me to help my students learn coping skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the privilege of teaching 23 lovely first grade students. My students get easily excited, love to connect and are on their way to learning what they need to succeed in second grade. They are passionate, enthusiastic and eager to be seen and heard.
My students are champions.
I work in an urban school where 97.9% of the students are eligible for free or reduced meals. Most live in a community that is consistently overcoming community violence and trauma. Despite the adversities they face my students continue growing and learning.
My Project
Students can't learn academic content like math and literacy until they feel safe and taken care of. Kids who have experienced trauma require additional support to feel this.
This project will give my students the tools that they need to stay calm even in the face of all the challenges that hit them.
With soft chairs, calming bottle, books related to social-emotional learning and timers students will learn how to take a break and come back better than ever.
I hope to give my students the strategies they need while they are still young so that they can thrive not only in 1st grade but in all the
