I am the faculty sponsor at our high school for both the Owl's Eye, our student-led newspaper and yearbook club. This is an amazing opportunity for them to learn about research, investigative journalism, and content creation across different kinds of media.
If this sounds familiar, it's because it is!
Alas, the last printer we ordered was defective, so we returned it. Rather than getting the same model, I've decided to go with a slightly upgraded brand/product to avoid a repeat hopefully.
The same reasons are still at work, however: there is one crucial element that ties all of the different journalism activities together: Design!
Creating digital layouts to help visualize and bring their content to life is essential for my students to bring together all the different content they have created and put it together in such a way that the whole becomes more than the sum of its parts. The digital design, however, does not always translate very well when printed.
The ability to print in color, to see how their content looks not only on screens but on physical paper where it will be printed as both newspaper and yearbook, is vital for them to see how the colors work and clash with each other. Please consider donating so my students can print their work on paper exactly as they have envisioned it!
