This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“Every child can learn, just not in the same day or the same way.” I work in a school community that serves low-income families. Within this school, there are large populations of students who are English Language Learners as well as students with special needs. My students are 4th graders within an ICT classroom setting. The students within my classroom are diverse in ethnicities as well as needs. About 40% of the students have disabilities such as speech and language impairments, orthopedic impairments, and learning disabilities. Although each student is in the same classroom, each one of them works and learns in a different way. As a 3rd year teacher, it’s not about the rate in which each student learns. It’s about knowing what we can do to support them along the way. On a daily basis, I try to think of ways that will help support the students within my classroom, inspiring them to remember that they can achieve any goal they can set their mind to.
My Project
This project was created with hopes to promote student choice within our classroom though the implementation of flexible seating. As teachers, it is important to know the learners within our classrooms. Having the opportunity to be a teacher for the same students for the second year in a row, I was able to see my students thrive when given the choice of how they wish to work. If my students were given the opportunity to choose one of flexible seating options, I believe that this will be a successful tool in which will help them in creating a comfortable, safe learning environments for themselves.
These flexible seating materials will help my students throughout our daily lessons and subject areas in order to support their academic and personal growth while promoting student choice.
The students within my classroom all have different needs that I hope to support. These materials will help me support those students who do not necessarily focus sitting in an ordinary classroom chair. Giving my students the chance to make that choice in their learning will help them become active participants in their educational experiences.
