This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Over half of my class this year is more than a year behind in reading...and it's only 2nd grade! I am a newer teacher and do not have the necessary books I will need to teach them the skills and strategies they need at their current level.
My students are wonderful children who are eager to learn!
I teach at an urban public school in a struggling neighborhood. My students are African American and Hispanic. Many of my students' parents do not speak or read English, and therefore are unable to help with homework. Already in 2nd grade many of the students in my class and at my school are achieving well below grade level.
My Project
I need sets of books to teach my students the skills and strategies they need to make progress and at a quick rate. As a 2nd grade teacher I don't have the book sets I need at my students' levels. I am asking for book sets at a kindergarten and first grade level in order to meet my students' needs. I will be using the books to teach things like phonics, fluency, concepts of print, comprehension, word solving strategies, and vocabulary. Please help me meet my students where they are in order to bring them up to grade level!
Your help is beyond appreciated!
My students are so deserving of a quality education. Without proper texts to read I would be settling to teach them with materials that are less than the best. It may not seem like a few book sets will make a difference, but I promise - all it takes is for students to feel success - and then they're hooked. Please help me reach my struggling readers and help me turn them in to super readers!
