This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are all Special Education students. They all have Individual Education Plans for Social / Emotional reasons. Most of them have experienced severe trauma in their lives which has caused them to have both learning and behavior challenges. Many of them are living in group homes, foster care, or with a parent who is having difficulties. They are in middle school, so in addition to the challenges they face in their personal lives, they are also struggling with the difficulties of beginning adolescence and the middle grades.
Despite all of the difficulties in their lives, my students have very big hearts.
They are able to demonstrate gratitude and appreciate those who take the time to make them feel special. Some of them are very strong readers, and some are just learning how to read. Some of them have the skills to overcome their life situations, and some of them are learning these skills every day. They all want to feel important and be loved. We try to make them feel this way while also providing an education so they can be successful in this world.
My Project
The Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System provides specific information needed to intervene with students who are reading below grade level. My students are 100% Special Education students.
The students I teach require instruction that is differentiated to their needs in order to experience success with reading.
Most of them have experienced difficulty accessing school. For many of them this is due to not being fluent readers.
The Fountas and Pinnell system will allow me to provide specific directed instructional strategies that support reading improvement over time. This assessment system will support the growth of so many students in need.
