My Students

In a world where technology continues to develop and improve, students in my classroom do not have access to a computer. My students deserve the chance to utilize recent technology to help enrich their learning and mastery of ELA and math concepts

I am a teacher at an inner city school in California.

The student population is extremely diverse with a large English Learner population, and 100% Title 1 (free and reduced lunch). With a college prep focus, my students come excited to learn and hungry for knowledge and interaction. They work hard, and their results show this. Our school has had a 72 point API gain over the last 3 years, and has shown strong commitment to increasing student achievement. My students love virtual stimulation and jump at the chance to use technology of any kind in the classroom setting.

My Project

By providing my students with two netbook computers, the children will have access to a world that some have literally never seen before. With the click of a button, students can connect to concepts in English-Language Arts, math, social studies, science, and writing by visiting websites, playing virtual games, and taking "online" field trips. In a society where an emphasis is placed on breadth of experiences and the "well-rounded" child, what better way to show my students the world and connect to academic standards than through online adventures? Additionally, as a school that fosters a "college-ready" culture, familiarizing students (who might not otherwise have the opportunity) with basic computer skills is another way to support them in their quest to attend the college of their dreams!

In supporting my students (many of whom lack the very resources described in this project), the educational playing field becomes a bit more "equalized".

Their excellence and ability to achieve in academics with basic pencil and paper is already apparent in their scores; I would love to see this level of excellence translated to technology as well! All children (regardless of background or circumstance) deserve the right to have the highest quality of education!
