Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is struggling to build a science fair program for our inner-city students, but they are often dissuaded from completing projects because they cannot afford the basic materials. No child wants to be the one to bring a project on a flimsy poster board or a flattened cardboard box.

I teach 8th grade physical science at a predominantly Latino middle school in an inner-city CA neighborhood where over 60% of the adults never finished high school, and almost 40% are living below the poverty line.

These financial and demographic constraints prevent many students from participating in educational experiences that many of us take for granted. For many of the students in our neighborhood, middle school is their last chance to experience academically challenging activities that could broaden their horizons and inspire them to seek out higher goals. Our school strives to give our students as many opportunities as possible to explore scientific material and develop the critical-thinking and problem-solving skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives, as well as produce quality projects that develop the skills they will need in high school, college, and the workplace.

My Project

Many adults remember our parents helping us at the kitchen table to complete science fair projects, as far back as elementary school. However, many of the students in our inner-city neighborhood had never experienced science fair until reaching our middle school, and some of those still have not completed a project all the way up until this year in eighth grade. Furthermore, their parents do not always have the resources to assist their children in this area. In the past few years, our school has attempted to build a strong science fair program, but the results have been mixed. My colleagues and I have worked to help students overcome some of the hurdles, such as creating time and space after school for students to work on their projects. However, I have seen some students put in the extra time, only to submit projects hand-written on collapsed cardboard boxes. Other students have even admitted to giving up on projects due to lack of resources.

By donating to this project, you will be providing my students with a blank canvas on which to express their scientific discoveries.

They will not have to hold back their ideas, or give up on their dreams, because they know that once their experiments are concluded, they will have the medium on which to communicate their learning to their peers and their parents.
