Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About 75% of our students are African American alongside with Latin and Asian children. In this wonderful diversity of cultures, I teach second grade to twenty-four kids. As a Social Justice and Language Arts Magnet, my public school stresses the importance of peaceful activism and problem-solving. However, we struggle to offer the best to our kids who come from economically disadvantaged families.

Because of the California budget deficit, we lost teachers, and we now have more students in our classes. It becomes imperative to teach explicitly the social skills that would keep order in the room and help the children to acquire coping skills and social competence. There is no learning in chaos! However, in order to train the kids effectively, we need children books to illustrate positive behavior or biographies of inspiring heroes of social justice.

All the books I ordered come to complete a conflict resolution program published by Scholastic. Students will listen to stories about conflict, feelings, diversity, respect and community, then define conflict escalators, and understand other perspectives. The writing journals and the toobaloos will help some new students with special needs as they would write whenever they feel too shy to discuss and talk in the toobaloos during self reading. Through constant reading and completing related activities, students will become familiar with a social competence vocabulary and societal expectations. This training will help them work cooperatively and independently; as they acquire self-discipline, they will be able to strive.

Your generous gift will not only benefit my class, but the other second grade classes as well. In our wonderful school, we team teach and consider all students our students. This donation will help many kids become better readers, efficient students, and later responsible citizens. You'll definitely make a difference as you'll help them reach their goals!
