My students need exciting playtime toys, such as building sets, puppets, and pretend food.

I am a first grade teacher in an urban school in Northern California. I teach 22 amazingly diverse children. We are also an inclusion school. Every classroom has children with special needs.

Children are at school to learn and I push these little 6 year olds so hard during the day. They work on reading and writing. Then math and P.E., not to mention science and social studies. The time that is also so important is play time. I call it choice time. This is when the children are allowed to make any choice they want and have free play time. Sadly, while my girls, and some boys, are creating with the nice arts and crafts in the class. My group of children, mostly boys, who love to build and play big, have little to play with.

The children need fun and exciting play choices such as, zoo builders, crystal climbers, and brick people. They will also have fun with forty assorted play animals and pretend food. What could be more fun than big animal puppets. To watch the children play for 30 minutes at the end of the day is a wonderful sight. This a time when they learn the important skills of sharing and cooperating. They learn to make friends and play nice with each other, including anyone who wants to join them.
