My Students
The students that I serve are creative, genuinely curious about science, and have a deep dedication to having fun while learning.
Our middle school students' determination to navigate & persevere through the economic, social and emotional struggles, as they come of age in the city of Chicago, is unmatched.
As an educator, I admire our adolescents' tenacity to develop as empathetic, well rounded, academically minded individuals. The students I serve are acutely aware that success and lasting change comes from empathy, collaboration, and hard work in academics - they understand that complacency only fuels the hardship that their community faces.
Our school is located in Chicago's East Garfield Park neighborhood. This beautiful west side community is one that grapples with layers of social ills; poverty, gang violence, and easy access to drugs are often part of the daily environment for my students - more than 90 percent of my students come from low-income households. The pressures to participate in what surrounds them are almost unavoidable. Despite the latter, my students and thier families continue to pursue a better future for themselves and their community.
My Project
Very often, students will come to the science lab during their recess and lunch hour in order to escape a sometimes chaotic and noisy indoor recess. Winters in Chicago can be grueling - children and adults alike feel the effect of cabin fever restlessness and monotony.
Offering a wide range of interesting and educational board games for our middle school students will provide opportunities for structured collaborative play during their recess and lunch time.
The studied benefits of play for adolescents is ever growing. Offering a respite from daily structured learning in the form of play has been found to help build students' social and emotional skills through communication and collaboration necessary when participating in board games. Infusing interesting and educational board games into recess will support healthy brain development by creating new avenues for students to engage with one another.
