I work with a group of students with intellectual disabilities, including autism, in a middle school setting. Our school is in a small tight-knit community, and many of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Despite the many difficulties they are faced with, my students have the drive to succeed.
These students work hard to overcome obstacles and meet their goals.
I have high expectations for them and push them to achieve at a higher level each day. They rise to the challenge and are always very proud of their accomplishments.
My Project
My students work hard all day long, and sometimes they experience emotions that they cannot control. They need sensory boxes, pillows and a swing to add to our sensory zone to help them regulate their bodies. A book about building sensory rooms will help me in the future to continue adding to this space to make it the best sensory room we can. The tricycle will give students the opportunity to work through some of their physical needs in a safe manner, within our school building.
Children who have sensory needs are much more successful when they have the right tools and the space to regulate their bodies.
It is my goal as their special ed teacher to give them these tools and to teach them self advocacy skills to help them become successful adults.
