Help me give my students vinyl arbors, wood planter raised beds with trellis, a wooden wishing well, and coco coir pith to enhance our Hawaiian Lei Garden.
We are happy we live in Hawaii! As a melting pot of all cultures, lei-making and giving is part of our way of life. Giving lei is a gesture of aloha and respect. In Hawaiian culture, the giving and wearing of a lei have a deeper meaning which exemplifies the person's cultural and spiritual perspectives.
This Place-Based Learning project will authentically expose the students to creating a Hawaiian Lei Garden on our school campus.
The vinyl arbors will be used for stephanotis, blue jade or other flowering vine to cling on to, and be used as a windbreaker for low delicate flowering plants. The wood planter raised bed with trellis will be used to plant various native Hawaiian flowering plants with different colors. The trellis will be a good place to hang orchids such as dendrobium and vanda. These planters will prevent soil erosion as well. The wooden wishing well will be used as part of the landscape to enhance the aesthetic value of the lei garden. Likewise, the coco coir pith will be added to our planting medium in retaining moisture. Therefore, the requested materials will be used for students' landscape ideas and project implementation.
This lesson will also utilize the Engineering Design Process (EDP), whereby students will think like scientists or engineers to build up ideas to turn them into real-world projects. Likewise, they will also evaluate and repeat many EDP steps to develop their ideas and prototypes. Students will also practice good feedback giving and receiving.
With your generous donation, this project will not only enhance the beauty of the lei garden but also help sustain it for a long period of time. Furthermore, this project will eventually help us save money buying leis for visitors.
