Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students at our school are resilient, hard-working, creative, and determined to succeed in school and beyond. A vast majority of our students come from a low socio-economic household. They have experienced myriad hardships during the pandemic, many of them social-emotional. Many students also have responsibilities at home that are unique and challenging. While it is definitely best that students are in-person, the unknowns caused by the pandemic can be unsettling and difficult for students to traverse. Therefore, our Social and Emotional Learning Committee is organizing the first Wellness Day for all 1500 students on January 31, 2022. It is our hope that our students can enjoy a day in which they can escape from the unknowns of the world around them and participate in fun activities that bring them joy, all in the familiar setting of their school, surrounded by their peers.

My Project

The Social and Emotional Learning Committee for our school is organizing the first Wellness Day for all 1500 students on January 31, 2022. Our faculty will be facilitating over 50 offerings, ranging from magic tricks to solving mysteries to volleyball to guided meditation. Students will rotate through four activities during that school day.

I am a member of the SEL team at our school, and I am ordering supplies that will make our first Wellness Day fun-filled for all.

In order to make more of the requested activities possible, we are asking for supplies for the art classes, as well as various other wellness day activities, including self-care activities.

As we are now on a semester schedule, January 31st will be a day of transition, the only break between the semesters. These materials will be used for some of our arts/crafts and self-care projects. For example, students may be painting rocks to make succulent gardens, cross-stitching, crocheting, giving each other manicures, playing bingo, solving murder mysteries, and decorating cookies.

We are hoping that many students will be able to leave the first Wellness Day with a souvenir that they made. Students will learn new skills taught by our teachers and staff.

Those participating in activities like bingo or murder mysteries will leave with happy memories, and we will encourage picture taking as mementos.
