My Project

I work with preschool through 5th graders that are receiving counseling services as part of their individualized education plans. My school serves students with autism, speech/ language impairments, learning disabilities, and intellectual disabilities. It is so valuable for these learners to have lots of visual supports and hands-on tactile resources when they are introduced to and practicing new skills.

My students are working on developing prerequisite social and emotion regulation skills such as communicating their wants and needs, engaging in parallel play, initiating social exchanges, taking turns with others, labeling and communicating their feelings, asking for help, engaging in coping strategies, and developing their frustration tolerance.

Visual timers will be used to support kids with attending to tasks for increasing amounts of time and regulating their emotions when ending activities. We will be using some of the toys (such as trains and blocks) to engage in parallel play activities and practice self-advocacy with visual or verbal prompts to ask for desired items. The tea set and play food will be utilized in sessions for students to practice taking turns, asking for and offering items to others, and tolerating wait times. (A tea party is one of my favorite activities to do with students because it gives them the opportunity to practice so many skills in a fun and interactive way!). We will be using the potato head to talk about whole body listening skills. Puppets are needed so that students can practice problem solving in a safe way in preparation for implementing this skill in real-life classroom and school situations. My students are so excited to learn and practice new skills. I can't wait to see the progress towards their counseling goals with the support of the materials from this project. Thank you!
