Support Our Bilingual Special Ed Storytelling & Reading Corner!
Help me give my students in our middle school bilingual special education (BSE) classroom a reading corner and snacks to allow them to excel and feel safe.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This project will help us build an engaging reading corner and provide snacks/supplies for our students. MS 50's bilingual special education (BSE) program supports high-need English language learners through culturally and linguistically responsive instruction that addresses cognitive, academic, and linguistic needs. These materials are important as our students have experienced trauma, are new to the United States, and have large interruptions to their formal education.
Our goal is to help our students fall in love with learning and literacy by creating a welcoming and comfortable space.
The chairs, beanbags, rug, etc. will encourage our students to read by easing school and life-related anxiety. A magical reading corner will help us foster a unique classroom culture and homey/safe environment, especially during ELA and HLA literacy instruction.
Due to the home conditions of many of our students, the snacks and water bottles will ensure they have the fuel to be engaged and present during classes. Finally, the supplies such as the notebooks, erasers, pencils, stickers, sticky notes, etc. will be used as journals and resources to help teach the students storytelling techniques and to help them explore their own voices.
