Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom is loud, energetic, and fast-paced. I teach three different band courses, two vocal music courses, and one piano course. My students work extremely hard to come together and develop their skills as musicians, both as soloists and as a part of an ensemble.

My school is situated in the middle of a struggling community.

Our population is largely Hispanic, and many of our students are English Language Learners. The students at my school view many of our school organizations as a second family and support system. My music students are hardworking, funny, and passionate. They support one another and work well together. One of the things I am most proud of my students for is the way the encourage one another as well as hold each other accountable for their actions. They all understand that our band and choir ensembles are a team and that each person plays a vital role in the successful operation of the ensemble.

My Project

Over the past five years, the music program has flourished. As a result, we are constantly in need of more materials. My students are always helping raise funds for a variety of items, and we have been lucky enough to receive grants to purchase musical instruments throughout the years. The next item on my wish list is a set of good, quality, musical chairs. My students currently use a set of chairs that were most likely retrieved from the Island of Misfit Toys. They are all different colors, shapes, and sizes, and many have graffiti all over them. Additionally, they are old and falling apart. These musician chairs we are requesting would not only look better in our rehearsals and performances, but they are designed to encourage proper posture, which leads to better performance.

These new chairs will "literally support the band" and help our music students perform better.

Additionally, it will further instill a sense of pride in what they are a part of. My students have always taken great care of all of the new materials we've received over the years. They are proud to be a part of our music program and this is just one more way to improve their image and self-confidence as an ensemble.
