Support Me in Building Financial Literacy With Card Games!
Help me give my students card games to give them an activity that will simultaneously reduce their screen time and engage them in number sense while having fun!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school serves students in grades ETK-6. We are a Title I public school from the inner-city. More than 95% of our students are on the federal free meal plan. Most of our students get dropped off and arrive at school at 7:30 AM and continue to stay at school until 6:00 PM. In other words, our school is their home away from home.
I work with energetic and motivated second graders who are eager to learn.
I would love to have the opportunity to create an environment that empowers my students to reach their full potential as scholars and citizens of the 21st century.
My Project
Playing card games is a fun way to keep your family entertained while building financial literacy during COVID-19. When I noticed how focused and engaged my typically rambunctious four and five year old nieces were with playing card games like Uno and Go Fish, I realized that card games have the unique ability of keeping even the most restless kids focused. I want my students and their families to also enjoy the experience of sitting around a dining table and spending quality time with their families. I can imagine a table filled with laughter and delightful exchange of conversations while playing the games. I can envision how my students would spend quality time together instead of glued to the screen.
It is bad enough that distance learning requires young children to spend so much time on the screen.
However, by giving my students a recreational activity will help fill time that would otherwise be spent at the computer playing video games or mindlessly watching TV, I am able to alleviate this issue. My goal is get my students to do fun some engaging activities while building and enhancing financial literacy skills such as adding and subtracting fluently. They can improve cognitive skills like memory and reasoning.
Please help me invest in my students' social emotional well being while we are also investing in their future in these unprecedented times.
