My students need books like, The House on Mango Street, Goodbye Days, and many other books that will transport them beyond the classroom and their own little cubbyhole of the world.
My students are a pleasantly rambunctious bunch. Our classroom is highly collaborative, and a day hardly ever goes by without my kids conferring with their peers about a text they read, sharing something they wrote in their mixtapes, or swapping dad jokes before the bell.
My students are wildly different in temperament, learning preferences, and future goals, but when they share space, they become a beautiful amalgamation of young people who want to explore, grow, and share in the successes of our little community.
My Project
My students need books like, The House on Mango Street, Goodbye Days, and many other books that will transport them beyond the classroom and their own little cubbyhole of the world. My students, especially sophomores, have spent time learning to appreciate reading that isn't attached to a test or assignment.
My classes have requested titles that deal with topics like sports, current events, and teen mental health.
After reading I Am Malala last fall, many students became particularly invested in social justice issues.
I want these kiddos to have instant access to books that intrigue, entertain, and educate. I want them to read texts highlighting characters they can identify with. I want them to continue approaching reading with a desire to find out what happens next. Our classroom library will be well loved!
