Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are from a low-income area. A large portion of my students have social and financial problems. Most of these students are bilingual and receive free lunch. They struggle to bring in supplies and often struggle to pay and attend events.
My students are good children from low-income families that deserve the tools necessary to help them prepare for their future; with all the obstacles facing my students, school supplies should not be one of them.
They are hard workers who strive to produce work, and lack the supplies to do so.
My Project
This year kicked off our school's first organized girls' sport. Coach Heiden and I started a girls' basketball team this year. We had a great season; going undefeated in the regular season and winning the Staten Island Championship. We continued our successful season defeating the Championship team from Manhattan before losing to the Bronx. We are so proud of this team and would like to continue this new program at I.S.61.
To create more unity in seasons to follow, we would like to get the girls' matching socks and shooting shirts.
These girls play with a tremendous amount of integrity and heart. Not only are these girls tremendous athletes but, they are also excellent students who have to maintain a passing average to participate. We would love your support to further our success, both on and off the court.
