My Students

As stated in our vision statement, our students are truly “a community of lifelong learners with heart.” Ranging in age from 3-12, our school services students who come from a variety of different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. We service a high population of English Language Learners (ELL), special education, and students who dwell in apartments/condominiums, making a majority of our students transient.

Despite the diverse student population we cater to, all students have one thing in common, and that is they are all hungry for learning and broadening their abilities and knowledge.

With the goal of educating the whole child, students are beginning to shine in different areas other than just the core subjects.

My Project

After attending various workshops and trainings, the one common takeaway I've learned is that in order for students to succeed, they need to do. Students need to explore the concepts being taught in a hands on matter. Students can't just sit and memorize facts all day; they need to be the ones to come up with the solutions through trial and error, explore different strategies using manipulatives, etc.

There are different approaches to teaching and learning math.

Having various resources will help the different learners in my class explore those ways. In doing so, my hope is that the students will learn to appreciate and love math even more.

My students need a number balance, Greg Tang games, whiteboard erasers and a mouse to help them succeed in math. The number balance will help them explore concepts such as algebraic equations, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc. The Greg Tang games will allow for critical thinking to happen in the classroom, as his games are very challenging, yet a very engaging way to learn math. Lastly, my students will need erasers for whiteboard work and a mouse for Smartboard interaction from anywhere in the room. These resources will greatly improve their critical thinking skills which is vital for the real world.
