This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day my students come to school with enthusiasm. However, since they are all bilingual diverse learners with reading deficits, they become frustrated. I want my students to feel free and successful while reading. As Frederick Douglas said: "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free."

I teach reading and math to middle school bilingual diverse learners in a Title I inner-city neighborhood school in Chicago.

My students are inquisitive and eager to learn. Most of them are first born generation in this country. Their parents are immigrants who have two or three jobs to make ends meet. All my students receive free lunch. Our community has limited resources, our public library is 20 min away.

My Project

This high interest, low readability classroom library will be used as a part of our Literature Circles as well as part of our library check out system. The students will enjoy reading these books either in class or at home. My students will learn that there is always an available resource for them.

This project will impact my students' lives because by reading materials that they are able to read fluently and comprehend, they will gain independence while reading.

It will provide them with the freedom they deserve.
