Help me give my students support in the classroom. We can really utilize this iPad pro to promote reading fluency by listening to audio books as well as providing visual and kinesthetic aids through drawing and visualizing concepts.
My students at Bushwick Ascend Middle School strive for excellence every single day. As a Special Education teacher, I help my students access their material by scaffolding the work in order to meet them where they are. This includes providing visual, kinesthetic and auditory aids when necessary.
Although many of my students are English Language Learners, this does not deter them from putting 110% into all they do.
They are creative, curious and intelligent young adults that deserve all of the support and resources that I can give them.
Through Special Education Teacher Support Services, I pull small groups of students out of the classroom to promote reading fluency and comprehension of the text they are reading in their general education classrooms.
Though many of my students are currently performing below grade level, the goal is to grow as much as possible within this school year; many of my students are on the pathway to being declassified from special education services within the next two years!
My Project
As a small group special education teacher, I am constantly thinking through ways to support my scholars who are below grade level. This can be very difficult to do on my laptop which is very old. I am unable to edit materials for students due to the lack of formatting options and often have to write out the supports for them, which means I lose the ability to provide visual aids. With an iPad Pro, I will be able to really scaffold their material to ensure my students' needs are being met.
Similarly, many of my English language learners are able to speak the language but have extreme difficulty reading it.
With this iPad, I will be able to provide them with access to audio books which help promote reading fluency. Of course, we read together aloud in class, but I would like them to have access to independent books that they can listen to and read on their own. Students learn when they have the choice to read what they like, and especially hear what is being read to them while also reading it at the same time.
Lastly, many of my students learn kinesthetically, which means they are hands-on learners. With the iPad pro, I will be able to download programs which provide them with the opportunity to form words letter by letter to support sounding out words which promote reading comprehension. Thank you so much for donating to my classroom, the scholars at BWMS will benefit immensely from having this additional resource within our classroom! :)
